As I look back on the past ten months, it’s hard to believe how much my life has changed since I arrived in the United States as an exchange student from Spain. This experience has been transformative in more ways than I could have imagined. It’s not just about learning a new language or adapting to a different culture; it’s about personal growth, making lifelong friendships, and discovering new passions.
Joining JROTC: A Life-Changing Decision One of the highlights of my exchange year has been my involvement in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC). When I first heard about JROTC, I was intrigued but unsure of what to expect. Joining JROTC has proven to be one of the best decisions I’ve made during my time here. The program has taught me valuable life skills such as leadership, discipline, and teamwork. It has also given me a sense of belonging and purpose. Through JROTC, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in various activities, including physical training, leadership camps like JCLC, I also joined Drill Team and Color Guard. Each activity has helped me grow in confidence and resilience. I’ve learned to push my limits, both physically and mentally, and have discovered a strength within myself that I didn’t know existed.
Making New Friends and Building Connections Another incredible aspect of my exchange experience has been the friendships I’ve formed. Moving to a new country where you don’t know anyone can be daunting, but the warmth and openness of the people I’ve met have made the transition much smoother. From my second host family to my classmates and fellow JROTC cadets, I’ve been surrounded by supportive and welcoming individuals. These friendships have enriched my experience in countless ways. They’ve not only helped me improve my English but also provided me with a deeper understanding of American culture and traditions. We’ve shared laughs, celebrated holidays together, and created memories that I will cherish forever. Whether it’s cheering at a high school football game, exploring new places, or simply hanging out, each moment has been a testament to the bonds we’ve built.
Reflecting on a Year of Growth and Happiness As my exchange year comes to an end, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions. I am incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met. This year has been the best of my life, filled with adventures, challenges, and profound personal growth. Living in the U.S. has given me a new perspective on the world and my place in it. It has made me more independent, confident, and adaptable. I’ve learned to embrace change and step out of my comfort zone, knowing that growth often comes from the most unexpected places.
Looking Forward While I am excited to return to Spain and reunite with my family and friends, I know that a part of me will always remain connected to Washington and Lakes, and the incredible journey I’ve had here. I am thankful for the opportunity to be an exchange student and for the many ways it has shaped me. This year has shown me the importance of stepping beyond familiar boundaries, seeking out new experiences, and building connections with people from different backgrounds. I am leaving the U.S. with a heart full of gratitude and memories that will last a lifetime. To anyone considering an exchange program, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. It might just be the best decision you ever make. THANKS TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND INSTRUCTORS FOR MAKING MY YEAR WAY BETTER!
