My Experience at Cirque Du Soleil (Alegria)

Brookelle Barnes, Editor/Reporter

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to see the Alegria show presented by Cirque Du Soleil. The show was held at Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington. Cirque Du Soleil with the English translation of ‘Circus of the Sun’ is a Canadian based entertainment company and the largest contemporary circus producer in the world. Cirque Du Soleil is mainly performed in Las Vegas, Nevada with its most infamous performance “Mystere;” but they are also on tour with other shows like Alegria, Ovo, Kurios, Kooza, and Crystal (but that is just a few).

Alegria, meaning “cheer up” or “joy” in Italian/Spanish tells the story of change throughout time, sorrow, and happiness throughout the dark. With 9 acts throughout the show, it was incredible to see. Everything from the original live music to the storyline, visuals, performances, it was all amazing. The show consisted of a wonderful hula hoop soloist, a fire knife dance, the “hand to hand” balancing act, the “power track” trampoline acrobatics, “high bars” aerial performance, “aerial straps” dynamic duo, the beautiful “synchronized trapeze duo,” “Acro-poles, pillars of power,” and the “crossed wheel.” All these acts were beautifully performed, some more intense than others but overall, a jaw dropping show.

This is Cirque Du Soleil’s last weekend in Seattle (March 12-13th) before they perform in Vancouver, British Columbia from March 25th– June 5th. The next nearest showings of Alegria will be in Portland, Oregon from June 16th– July 17th. Tickets range from about $50-$200 depending on where you are sitting but I would say it is worth every penny. I would highly recommend this show to anyone, it makes for a great 90 minutes (about 1 and a half hours) of pure entertainment.

These performers are truly incredible to see. From their athletic ability to the costume designs, make-up artists, live musical performances, dangerous stunts, and emotional storyline; I would genuinely recommend this show (and any other Cirque Du Soleil show) to anyone who wants a truly incredible show.
