On November 6th, Weatherman and Television star Al Roker announced that he had prostate cancer on the Today show. He was optimistic saying “It is a good news, bad news kind of thing. The good news is we caught it early, not great news is that it’s a little aggressive.”

The prostate is a small-walnut shaped gland in males that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. About 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Prostate cancer is more likely to develop in older men and in African American men.

His Doctor, Dr. Vincent Laudone said that his cancer appeared to be somewhat confined to his prostate, but because it was more aggressive, they wanted to treat it. So, after a discussion with Mr. Roker and Dr. Laudone settled on removing the prostate. On November 13th, he went home after having the surgery and posted on his Twitter account “Can’t wait to be back with my pals and our amazing cast of writers, producers, and tech folks.”

On November 23, Al Roker returned to the Today show saying that he is feeling good and that he had support from his surgeons, his wife, his children, his co-workers, and so much more. He says that he was taken real good care of and that now he will be testing every 6 months to see if the cancer has returned.

People have been pouring in prayers and best wishes for Al Roker. His wife, Deborah Roberts posted “Let the healing begin. I am so in awe of this and his indomitable spirit. So blessed and grateful for avalanche of love, prayers and support for @alroker.”

We at the Lancer Ledger wish Mr. Roker the best and hope that he recovers well. It is amazing for Mr. Roker to share his diagnosis to everyone who watches the Today show.
