A long and complicated process
The college application process can feel overwhelming and complicated. As Dylan Farmer, a senior student, puts it, it is “a very long and complicated process.” College application is something that every senior must deal with, and it can feel like a daunting journey. You must gather your transcripts and dive into the process, which requires much time, effort, and perseverance.
One challenge of applying to colleges is that not everyone has parents who went to college or who are familiar with the process. Many high school seniors struggle with where to begin. Jamaree Holmes, a senior who has attended Lakes High School for all four years and is an avid member of the Lakes band, says, “I feel like they could talk about the Common App more, so students won’t have to pay $70 like I did.”
In my own experience, I learned about the Common App from another Lakes student. I did not fully understand how to qualify for free or reduced lunch, which would have allowed me to apply to colleges for free. Communication around this process can be lacking. However, the counselors at our school are doing a decent job providing workshops for students who have questions. I highly recommend going to them if you need help—they are a valuable resource.
The essay
Another part of the application process is the college essay. According to Dylan Farmer, the college essay is “the way for colleges to get to know you, what’s making you apply, and also your experiences.” Producing the right topic can be difficult. Not only do you need to create something deep and insightful, but you also need to ensure that your essay conveys your personality clearly and properly to the readers. Writing my own college essay, I struggled to find the right words that would truly represent who I am today.
Everyone wants free money, especially when it comes to college
Then there’s financial aid. Everyone wants free money, especially when it comes to college. I remember the first time I filled out my financial aid forms. It was a legal document backed by the IRS, but I did not really understand what it was or how it worked. I just knew it would help pay for college. I wish I had received more guidance on how to complete it properly. The process can be stressful, especially when you are unfamiliar with legal forms and when parents may be hesitant to share their personal financial information. Branasia Chin a Lakes High School senior one of the captains of the dance team and the platoon leader of JROTC states “I don’t even know what it is or what I’m looking at, all I know is it gives me free money”
Don’t forget to seek help
In conclusion, the college application process is challenging, but every high school senior must face it. It is important to seek out help and resources, whether it is through workshops, counselors, or peers. With the right support, you can navigate the complexities of the process and make it through successfully.
