Earth day happens annually on April 22nd. It spreads awareness for environmental protection. This annual event started in the U.S in the 1970s. Earth Day was put together by the US senator and environmentalist, Gaylord Nelson, and Denis Hayes who is a graduate student at Hardvard University. They put Earth Day together to inform the public about environmental problems. Earth Day became globally celebrated in 1990, and organizers say that it now involves over one billion people in nearly 200 countries. Past events cover environmental issues such as clean energy and climate change. They also talk about the benefits of planting trees. They suggest that people volunteer for a cleanup event to learn about plastic pollution damage. The organizers of Earth Day are saying that there will be a 60% decrease of plastic production by 2040.
