What is pet over population? Pet over population is the worry that the population of dogs and cats and exotic pets are growing too much. There is an estimated number of six to eight million pets being brought to U.S shelters every year. There are only 3,500 shelters, this is not enough. This is an issue because in the U.S there is an estimated three to four million pets euthanized, with 2.7 estimated being healthy. Over population is caused by animals not being spayed/neutered, pets are intentionally bred for people to buy which causes people not to adopt, people abandon dogs because they are not equipped to properly take care of them.
